Dr. Jim Miller: A Journey of Chiropractic Passion and Well-Being
From Childhood Inspiration to Overcoming Hurdles
From the time I was a kid tagging along with my grandma to her chiropractic appointments, I knew I wanted to be a chiropractor. Seeing how chiropractic care supported my grandmother’s comfort and mobility as she aged sparked my desire to help others experience similar benefits! She was the kindest person I’ve ever known, and seeing my grandmother’s journey with chiropractic care deeply inspired me, driving my passion to help people live healthier lives.
But becoming a chiropractor didn’t come easy. The first time I stepped into that anatomy lab, I was hit with the sheer complexity of the human body—especially the nervous system. It was overwhelming, and for a moment, I doubted if I could handle it. That hour wandering around the dissection table, feeling dazed, was a big hurdle for me. I had to dig deep and remember why I wanted to do this in the first place: to help people, just like my grandma. That drive pushed me through the toughest moments of my studies.
A Passion for Healing
After moving to New Zealand, I started my career in Auckland, eventually settling in Christchurch in 1998. For more than 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of people in Canterbury. Whether it’s pain relief, improving mobility, or enhancing overall health, my philosophy remains simple: I want people to live happier, healthier lives.
The secret? Keep the spine healthy—keeping the spine aligned can support a healthy nervous system, which plays a key role in the body’s overall function!
Beyond Pain Relief
When I started, I thought chiropractic was all about helping people get out of pain and back to work. But over the years, I’ve learned that chiropractic does so much more. Yes, it relieves pain, improves flexibility, and enhances mobility. But it also positively impacts so many other aspects of health and well-being. That realisation has driven me to continually update my skills and stay on top of the latest chiropractic techniques, including specialised training in posture correction.
Living What I Preach
As a semi-retired chiropractor, I continue to live by the principles I’ve always taught. Health is my ultimate goal—and not just for my patients, but for myself too! I eat a (mostly) Mediterranean diet, drink plenty of water, practice yoga and tai chi, and enjoy hill walks with my trusty sidekick, Marvelous Ms. Maple.
Walks With Marvelous Ms. Maple
Taking time for myself is as important as helping others. Whether it’s a peaceful walk with Marvelous Ms. Maple (the clinic dog), a yoga session, or a quick power nap (I’m a pro at those!), I make sure to recharge. And yes, I still get regular chiropractic adjustments—because masking symptoms with medication just isn’t my style. I’m all about correcting the cause of the problem!
Life Outside the Clinic
When I’m not in the clinic enjoying chats with patients and colleagues or working on a little maintenance here and there, you’ll find me spending time with my wife and adult kids. We’ve had some great adventures, including attending five of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s week-long retreats together (and the kids have come to a few as well!). I also love beach walks, café visits, socialising with friends, and yes, watching action movies (a bit of an adrenaline junkie at heart).
Still Connected to Chiropractic
Though a mountain bike accident during the first lockdown has temporarily sidelined me from seeing clients for adjustments, I’m still around the clinic, soaking in the positive energy, chatting with patients, and keeping the place running smoothly. Chiropractic will always be a part of my life, and so will the people who make it all worthwhile.
Here’s to health, happiness, and plenty of walks with Marvelous Ms. Maple!
